1
Use a palatable drink

In this video, we provide you with important tips for taming gilts while in isolation. The goal is to develop trust with the new gilts. If done routinely, they will repay you throughout their life in the herd.

One way to tame your gilts is to use a palatable drink such as sugar water or apple juice and spray it in their mouth.

2
Benefits

Providing the sugar water or apple juice during isolation as seen in this video has 2 benefits: 1) it allows for a positive approach towards the animals and 2) if you are working in a batching system, it prepares the gilts to more easily accept the progestin used to cycle gilts for their introduction into the breeding batch.

3
Breeding barn

In the breeding barn, the distribution of the progestin is simple and quick. The gilts are already familiar with this approach and readily take the progestin.
